Cyclists fall ‘like skittles’ at the Tour de France in spectacular crash

by

Multiple riders competing in the Tour de France were involved in a spectacular crash that saw them fall “like skittles” as the peloton descended the Col de Portet-d’Aspet on Stage 9 of the 2020 race.

The incident, which was caught on the television cameras, happened around the 54 kilometre mark, when the pack was travelling at speed as the road twisted and turned.

At least seven riders were involved, including Tobias Foss of EF Pro Cycling and summit specialist Sergio Higuita of EF Education First, who were both thrown to the ground.

The dramatic footage showed many of the riders struggling to regain their balance, but several could not stop in time and were sent tumbling over the edge of the road.

Fortunately, there were no major injuries with the riders all quickly able to get back up and back on their bikes, with only some minor scrapes and cuts.

It was the biggest crash of the race so far, and is a reminder of the risks that riders face when competing at the highest level of professional cycling.
