In August 2019, Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi was sentenced to six years in prison for spreading “propaganda against the state,” though his sentence avoided the maximum penalty of death. Salehi’s legal rights organizations such as Iran Human Rights had been advocating on his behalf since his arrest in March 2019. He was arrested for his music and political activism. Salehi’s lawyers maintained that his activities were all peaceful and legal and submitted an appeal against the sentence.
