Ramaswamy, founder and chief executive of San Francisco-based Rambus Inc., said Taiwan must be defended against potential Chinese aggression until at least 2028 when the United States has achieved “semiconductor independence” from foreign suppliers. In recent weeks, China has announced plans to increase its military presence in the region, something that has alarmed Taiwan.
Ramaswamy has declared his full support for Taiwan, calling it the “gem of Asia.” He has urged the US to show more support, both politically and economically, for Taiwan as it fights to maintain its freedom and autonomy. He believes the US can act as a buffer to potential Chinese aggression by providing economic incentives to bolster the island nation’s trade and technology infrastructure and encouraging the Taiwan government to become more open to foreign economic investment.
Ramaswamy says he will continue to push for US support of Taiwan until the US is semiconductor-independent. He believes the US should set aggressive goals, such as creating a semiconductor fabrication plant every 18 months to make sure it can end its dependency on foreign suppliers. He is hopeful that by 2028, the US will have achieved the necessary level of independence to reliably defend Taiwan without fear of reliance on other nations.
