FIDE, the international chess organization, has banned transgender women from competing in women’s chess events until further analysis can be conducted. The organization approved a policy in which transgender players must have “definitive proof” of their gender identity before being eligible to play. It also requires transgender players to undergo medical tests to evaluate their eligibility. The policy also states that players must “prove completely and unequivocally their anatomical sex” and that “the decision to allow a transgender person to play in a specific tournament may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.” FIDE has faced backlash, with some accusing it of “discrimination and exclusion.”
