First Nations soccer advisers have threatened to quit their roles if the Women’s World Cup organizers do not free more funding to develop Indigenous soccer. The advisers say that Indigenous representation is an essential part of the development of the sport and it has been overlooked for too long. They believe the financial resources should be redirected to improve youth soccer in Indigenous communities across the country. They argue that the existing funds diverted to the Women’s World Cup don’t adequately reflect Indigenous participation and that greater resources are needed to ensure that the Indigenous youth have an equal chance to excel in the sport.
