At least 55 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in clashes between rival forces in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, according to officials. The fighting erupted on Tuesday between an Islamist-backed militia and Special Deterrence Force (SDF) loyal to the United Nations-backed government in Tripoli. Both sides engaged in clashes that involved heavy weaponry, such as tanks and missiles. The clashes left at least 55 dead and a further 110 people injured. The violence also forced some residents to flee their homes. The United Nations and foreign embassies in the country have called on both sides to cease hostilities and engage in dialogue to resolve their differences.
