The impeachment trial of Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is set to begin in April 2021. Special prosecutors Leah Ray and Brent Webster were appointed in December 2020 to investigate and try the case against Paxton.

Paxton is accused of abusing his office by taking part in a $100,000 real estate deal with a friend, and by intervening in disputes on behalf of wealthy donors. The third felony count against Paxton alleges he misused his office to “further his personal interests.”

Paxton has denied all of the allegations against him. His lawyers have argued that the case should be dismissed, citing prosecutorial bias.

If the state House of Representatives votes to impeach, the Senate will then decide whether or not to remove Paxton from office. This process could take several months and could be complicated by the upcoming 2022 midterm elections.
