GOP lawmakers are sounding the alarm over the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to target and exploit children. The lawmakers cite the potential for AI technology to be used for facilitating child sex abuse, including creating and distributing manipulated images and videos of children. They are calling for greater vigilance against the emerging threats posed by AI technology. lawmakers have proposed a package of bills that would increase law enforcement capacity to investigate and prosecute these crimes, as well as broadening the scope of victims’ rights. The package of legislation would also extend laws barring possession of child pornography to include AI-generated child sexual abuse material. The bills would also establish a new research center to study how to better educate the public about the dangers of AI-enabled exploitation and abuse of children.
