Republican Dave McCormick launches bid for vulnerable Senate seat in battleground state

by

Former Congressman and Colorado Secretary of State Dave McCormick announced his candidacy for a vulnerable Senate seat in Colorado, in what promises to be a closely watched and fiercely contested race in a key battleground state heading into the 2020 election.

McCormick, a Republican, launched his Senate campaign Monday with a three-minute video that highlights his career in public service and touches on issues such as healthcare, the economy, immigration and environmental protection.

McCormick is the latest in a handful of Republicans vying to take on Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet. He announced his campaign in the same week as two other Republicans—former Colorado State University Football standout Cody Kessler and former Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier.

McCormick, 51, is the founder of Denver-based energy company Ascent Resources and served as Colorado’s secretary of state from 2007 to 2009. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2006 and 2010.

McCormick’s background, positions on certain key issues and his commitment to serving the state of Colorado will likely set him apart from the crowded Republican field in the Senate race.
