Former FBI counterspy chief Frank John McGonigal has pled guilty to charges of taking bribes and attempting to extort money from people he believed were connected to international organized crime. McGonigal was the head of the FBI’s organized crime unit, and regularly interacted with so-called “wise guys.” He was was accused of receiving more than $200,000 in cash and favors from several individuals in exchange for information on FBI investigations. In a plea agreement, McGonigal agreed to cooperate with the government in its investigation of others in organized crime. McGonigal had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges and is scheduled to be sentenced by a federal judge on June 29.
