At least eleven people are dead and fourteen injured after the roof of a church in central Mexico’s San Pedro Actopan town collapsed.
The incident occurred during a baptism ceremony inside the church on the afternoon of April 3, 2021. The roof of the church, which had been weakened by an earthquake in 2017, collapsed and trapped those inside.
The bodies of eleven people have been found. Of the fourteen people injured, five are in life-threatening condition.
The Mexican Army, Red Cross, and local emergency services were deployed to assist in the aftermath of the incident, and rescue operations by the army and volunteers are still ongoing.
The local government has declared three days of mourning in the wake of the tragedy and has sent its condolences to the families of those affected. The cause of the roof collapse is currently under investigation.
