Former House speaker floats idea of removing Gaetz from House GOP caucus, committees

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich floated the idea of removing Rep. Matt Gaetz from the House Republican caucus and any committees he currently serves on in response to the Florida lawmaker being investigated by the Justice Department over possible sex trafficking and related allegations. In an interview with Axios, Gingrich said that while Gaetz has maintained his innocence in the allegations, “suspending him from committees and from the Republican Conference themselves are sensible steps until they know more.” Gingrich also noted that “a lot of House Republicans would force him out if he doesn’t resign voluntarily.” While it is still unclear how Gaetz will fare, what is certain is that the Florida Republican is facing mounting pressure from within the House GOP amid the ongoing investigations.
