Italian authorities investigate Venice bus crash that killed at least 21 people

Italian authorities are investigating the causes of a bus accident in Venice, Italy, that left at least 21 people dead and dozens injured.

The accident occurred when the bus swerved off the road and crashed into the guardrail of a bridge in Cannaregio, a region of Venice, on Wednesday night. Emergency workers, including fire, police and ambulance teams, have been deployed to the scene.

Witnesses have reported that the bus, which was carrying around 40 people, was travelling at a high speed at the time of the accident. The driver, who managed to survive the crash, is being questioned by police in order to determine what caused the accident.

The Italian government has declared a day of national mourning, and condolences have been offered from all sides of the political spectrum.

The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has tweeted that he is “deeply moved” by the tragedy, and has offered the government’s assistance to the families of those affected.

The cause of the accident is still unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
