The Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of quantum dots was jointly awarded to the Japanese scientists Sumio Iijima and Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi (of the Tokyo Institute of Technology) in 2020. Their discoveries spurred a revolution in the field of nanotechnology and have been used to create a wide range of products ranging from next-generation television displays and computer displays to lasers, medical imaging devices, and biomedical treatments for cancer. In particular, quantum dots are used to create fluorescent or colour-emitting properties in displays and medical treatments in cancer therapies.
