On Friday, former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis plead guilty to a state charge of interfering with Georgia’s 2020 presidential elections. Ellis, who served as a special counsel to Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, was accused of attempting to persuade the Georgia secretary of state to include false claims of voter fraud in the state’s final election certification.
Ellis’ guilty plea comes as part of a deal with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that allows her to avoid prison time. In exchange for her guilty plea, prosecutors dropped a felony charge against Ellis, leaving her with only a misdemeanor public service charge.
Ellis is the first person to face criminal charges related to the Trump campaign’s efforts to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. She is the first Trump associate to plead guilty in the Georgia election investigation, and her guilty plea has the potential to set the tone for the numerous ongoing investigations into Trump, his administration, and his campaign.
