Democrats are already starting to portray House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s choice for the next House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as a boogeyman. Claiming McCarthy is too ideological and won’t work across the aisle, Democrats are using McCarthy’s past comments as evidence that he won’t be able to drive any sort of collegiality between the two chambers. Democratically-aligned opponents have also taken aim at his close ties to President Donald Trump, implying that if McCarthy is selected, he may be unwilling to compromise to get things done in the House.
