Autoworkers hesitate on new contracts despite ‘record’ pay increases

by

Auto workers are hesitating to sign new contracts despite “record” pay increases from United Auto Workers (UAW) and automakers, fearing the offer may hurt their job security and benefits in the long run. Many workers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the proposed two-tier wage plan, which would set up a lower base wage for new hires, while forcing the more experienced older workers to pay higher health insurance costs, among other issues. Workers are also concerned about the lack of job security, as automakers increasingly turn to more temporary workers and fewer permanent jobs. Moreover, workers are worried that the pay increase in the contracts does not make up for the cuts to their benefits and other job security issues.
