China is mourning the loss of former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that Kissinger “was a good friend of the Chinese people and a respected elder statesman in international community”.
He said that Kissinger, who had made “outstanding contributions to the transformation of China-US ties and enhancement of trust and cooperation between the two sides,” had left a lasting impact on China’s modernisation drive and world peace.
Kissinger visited Beijing numerous times over the years beginning in 1971 when as Nixon’s National Security Advisor he took part in Richard Nixon’s historic visit to the country which opened the way for normalised relations. Wang said that Kissinger was “a most valued old friend of the Chinese people” and that “China mourns him with profound grief”.
