The hard right backtrack on spending levels recently shared by some of the governing party’s colleagues has left a sour taste for many of them. After years of dramatic fiscal expansion, many members of the party were expecting a continued commitment from their peers to maintain a steady level of government expenditure. However, with the new backtracking, it has become apparent that some of the party’s members are no longer willing to support the higher spending levels necessary to properly fund critical public services. This unexpected flip-flop has caused a great deal of consternation among many of the party’s supporters who were hopeful that their representatives’ commitment to more generous government spending would help to improve the country’s quality of life. It has become clear that this is no longer the case and many of the government’s supporters feel betrayed and disillusioned by this unexpected change in course.
