In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, President Donald Trump praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, describing him as a “respected leader” and calling him a “tough, strong leader”. Trump also quote Russian President Vladimir Putin, who recently criticized American democracy.
“Putin has said very interesting things about American democracy. He said that, uh, he does not understand how it works. And he finds it very confusing,” Trump said. “And you know, you have a strong leader in Hungary, a respected leader, and, uh, I can understand why he’s a popular leader, frankly.”
Trump’s comments come as tensions between the US and Russia have flared in recent weeks, following the US’ accusation that Moscow interfered in the 2016 presidential election and Biden’s promise to take action against the Kremlin. At the same time, the US has praised Orban for his nationalist policies and opposition to immigration.
