A wind-powered cargo ship has set sail from the Netherlands, in a move to make shipping greener. The “Avontuur” left the port of Amsterdam on Sunday, heading to Antwerp, Belgium, carrying 8,000 metric tons of goods including paper, plastics and metals. The vessel is powered by a system of rotors that generate electricity from the wind, and its journey is expected to cut its emissions by up to 40 percent compared to a regular cargo ship. Its operators say it’s the first fully solar- and wind-powered cargo ship to be used on a scheduled route, and that the journey could be the first of many.
