A number of high-ranking Libyan officials, including the country’s interior minister and the deputy head of the National Guard, have been detained as part of an investigation into deadly floods in Libya’s capital. The officials, who were taken into custody by members of the Special Deterrent Force, are being questioned in relation to allegations that improper flood control systems were in place in public and private spaces. The rains that flooded the capital resulted in at least 10 deaths, and the displacement of thousands of people. The government of Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj has promised an investigation into the floods and warned public officials that those found to be negligent could face criminal prosecution.
