On April 5th 2021, Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz filed a motion in the House of Representatives to remove House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the house. Gaetz, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, accused McCarthy of not doing enough to support the former president’s agenda, while also opposing efforts to combat voter irregularities in the 2020 election. Gaetz has been one of the most vocal members of the House in support of Trump and has repeatedly called for an investigation into the 2020 election. This motion is unlikely to pass due to the lack of support from other Representatives, but it is yet another example of the ongoing tensions between factions of the Republican Party.
