as House leader

McCarthy has expressed disappointment in his ouster as House leader. In a statement after the vote, he said that he was “humbled and grateful” for the support he received from the Republican Conference and that he was proud of the “Decentralized Leadership” shared by Speaker Ryan and himself. He also thanked House Republicans for their support and called for unity going forward.

In a subsequent statement, McCarthy noted that he was honored to have served as House leader and that the Republican Conference’s “history-making agenda and accomplishments were possible because of their focus and perseverance.” He praised his supporters and said he looked forward to “continuing their work.”

McCarthy also thanked Speaker Ryan for his work and said he looked “forward to working with him going forward.” He stressed the need for Republicans to focus on the election in November and to “put the American people first.”

Finally, McCarthy said he would continue to support the Republican cause and be a contributor to the party going forward. He noted that as the “only House Republican leader in 14 years who was not a member of the Republican congressional leadership,” he was “proud” to have served in the role. He concluded by adding that he was “thankful for the chance to have served and humbled by the support I have received.”
