Tom Emmer is an American politician who serves as the Republican Party majority whip of the United States House of Representatives since 2021 and is running for House speaker with the endorsement of Republican leader Kevin McCarthy.
Emmer was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2005. Prior to his election to the House, he served as a volunteer for various conservative organizations, most notably Citizens Against Government Waste. After his reelection in 2008, Emmer was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 2010 and served as the Senate Majority Leader.
Emmer is a known proponent of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and pro-growth economic policies. He has strongly opposed government overreach, unreasonable taxation, and government debt. He is also strongly pro-life and supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
In 2020, Emmer ran for the Minnesota 6th congressional district seat and won. After the 2020 election swept Republicans to the House majority, McCarthy chose Emmer as the party’s majority whip. If elected, Emmer would become the first House Republican from Minnesota to hold the position of Speaker since 1918.
