Although it is difficult for third-party candidates to gain significant support in the U.S., there are several who could potentially catch on in the future. Libertarian candidate and tech entrepreneur John McAfee is also a potential contender, with his message of small government and civil liberties. Former Ohio Governor John Kasich ran as a Republican in 2016, but his more moderate message could resonate with voters should he choose to run as an independent in 2020 or beyond. Other third-party candidates who may gain attention in the future include independent conservative Evan McMullin and Green Party candidates Jill Stein and David Cobb.
