Following a skirmish between Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea near the Crimean peninsula, satellite images show a Russian navy ship burning after being struck by Ukrainian forces.

The incident occurred on November 25 near the Kerch Strait, a strategic narrow waterway connecting the Russian mainland to the annexed Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea.

The Ukrainian navy thwarted a Russian attempt to close the strait, with a satellite image showing an amphibious assault ship on fire. According to reports, several Russian ships were damaged following heavy shelling from the Ukrainian side. Several Russian soldiers were injured in the conflict and a Ukrainian navy boat was destroyed.

In the wake of the incident, tensions between the two countries have risen. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has advised the Ukrainian parliament to approve a presidential decree to introduce martial law in some parts of the country for a period of thirty days.
