President Donald Trump conjured up a phony dispute with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over China tariffs after the Republican governor praised the taxes on Chinese imports.
In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Trump implied that DeSantis had opposed tariffs on Chinese goods while in office, when in fact the governor had supported them.
“You know, Ron DeSantis, he said not so good things about the tariffs, but now he likes the tariffs – because he sees what it’s done for Florida,” Trump said.
However, DeSantis has been a vocal supporter of tariffs on Chinese imports. He sent a letter to Trump in July 2019 thanking him for implementing tariffs to level the trade playing field with China.
In response to Trump’s comments and claims of a dispute between the two, DeSantis’ office said in statement to CNN: “The Governor has long supported tariffs on China.”
